The New Viagra?

I felt like Jerry Maguire this week.
Not like a “you complete me” moment, nor was it having an amusing 4 year old boy tell me “the human head weighs 8 pounds”. Nope, it was the moment where Jerry resigned from his job and asked all his co-workers the famous question…
“Who is with me? Who, is coming with me?”
Renee Zellwegger didn’t offer to join me (or fall in love with me for that matter), but I didn’t ask her to either. And of course I have my own Spunky woman 😉

Who is with me to do what? Answer: Push ups.

Not  do push ups together per se.  No, we’re not organising a flash mob where everyone suddenly starts busting out push ups at the mall, although it might become a phenomenon. Neither are we gathering in the park to exercise together. Nope, this is dozens of locations across many cities and numerous countries. Kitchens, bedrooms, offices, sheds, parks or anywhere a flat surface is found.

technically a flat surface, but bloody hard work when you’re at sea!

The next questions are naturally how and why. How is we follow a 7 week program written by Steve Speirs. He guides you through push up sessions each Monday, Wednesday and Friday. There are 6 programs to cater for all abilities, because some people can only do 4 push ups while others can already do 60. For someone doing 4 now, they may aim for 14, 34, or 54. After the 7 week program they may continue towards Steve’s goal of 100, or move on to a new exercise challenge happy with their push up results.

Why do it? For me, the combination of my Bucket List, winter and an intense period ahead at work. My Bucket List has ‘Do 100 Consecutive Push Ups’ as a personal goal. As of yesterday I can do 42 before my arms fall off, so 100 is still a long way off. Secondly, I’m in Istanbul where winter is rapidly approaching and my skinny, bald body is built for warmth not cold. Lastly, I’m the engineer on a new sailboat and we have a busy shipyard period ahead. Rather than focus purely on work as I did previously (to the detriment of my health), by making a commitment to regular exercise some work/life balance will be maintained.100_one_pushup

So, on Tuesday night I posted a status update on Facebook to publicly commit myself to Steve’s program. 20 minutes later I spontaneously invited my friends to join me also. A girl from England said yes, then a girl from Estonia, a guy from South Africa, a guy from the US, cousins, school friends…

With participants spread across the globe we can’t meet at the town square to share our journeys. So, the next best thing is a Facebook group.

Hmm I thought, this is growing, best I contact the author. I told Steve I hadn’t purchased the book in paper format and had the PDF copy of his book on my e-reader (also not purchased). Highlighting how Steve puts people before profits, he was more than happy for us to use his program. He was simply overjoyed that people were eager to have a go. Thank you Steve, I will dedicate my 100th push up to you!

I will donate $1 to Steve’s site for every push up I can do after 7 weeks. I hope it costs me $200 ha ha. Unlikely, but you never know.

We are now 67 participants, a mix of young, old, fit, fat and everywhere in between. It has grown from a mutual desire to test ourselves, knowing that irrespective of our final result, simply by completing 21 sessions over 7 weeks, we are all winners.

Tempted to join in?

Whether you can do 2, 22 or 42 push ups as of today, there is a program for you. My goal of 100 can be different to yours. However, we both should have priority number one as completing the program. Most of us are starting on Monday the 17th of November, but you can join in any time. Simply join the Facebook group ‘Push Ups, The New Viagra’. The title alone indicates we’re going to have fun during the next 7 weeks!

With you on the floor,

Barney

PS: As I’ve told the group, to succeed at this challenge simply get horizontal three times a week 😉
